This should be fun, with the "big three American truck/diesel engine Manufacture's" all on the same site. First I am a Diesel enthusist, anything dieselpower is ok in my book; however the gloves come off from there I am a buisness owner Midsouth lawn & landscape, Inc, we own & operate diesel trucks & diesel tractors, (ZTR) zero turn radius diesel mowers, 30ft gooseneck dually tandum trailer, 2 tandum bumper hitch trailers.
I started out my buisness with gasoline powered trucks, becuase I could not afford new diesel equipment, and diesel trucks. Diesel equipment came first. Then a few years later a buisness partner who loved the Ford powerstrokes, me personally I have known that the Cummins ISB 24 valve inline I-6 turbo diesel is the only "true" diesel. My father a GM engineer had always said that a inline engine gas or diesel is more realiable, easier to maintain, and requires little or no internal balancing.
While Dodge remained true until this year to the 5.9L design, the Powerstroke, and Duramax have been plagued with engine problem & changes. I know from personal experience, I sold my 02 F-350 crewcab dually with the venrable 7.3l powerstroke, first a bad tranny at 43,500miles, then at 52,000 bad cam position sensor then, way to many faulty HEUI fuel injectors; furthermore the v-8 design, and HEUI injector of the powerstroke made the labor expensive & many hours of downtime. At which point Ford gave up on the injectors, I sold it never to purchase another V-8 diesel powerplant again. The Duramax's Iron blocks with aluiminum heads bad design, weak internals, overheating problem & the dreaded limp mode. Yeh the Duramax can put out the HP/TQ, but it requires new internals, dual cp3 pumps on, and on.
Cummins ISB I-6: no glowplugs, intake air heater/grid, simple I-6 design, forged internals, realiable/easy to maintain. weak link is the (LP) lift pump & Bosch VP44 injector pump, which is total fuel lubricated, so I add 2 stroke TC-W3 engine lubricant to every ULSD fill up to replace to loss of lubricity.
