I am considering to purchase a 1999 Laramie SLT equipped with a Cummins 5.9 engine, with 170K miles. This is a 1-owner truck, but it is questionable how the service with performed and kept up. I discovered oil deposits on the underside at the transmission, transmission cross-member and some around the oil drain plug. The squash-ring could be worn and need replacing. However, my concerns are for the more prominent deposits that are apparently from "blow-by" that is located around the cross-member and other underneath parts of the truck. There is no evidence of oil on the tailgate area. The engine breather tube has evidence of oil dripping, but apparently not under any significant pressure. Can anyone tell me if this is normal engine wear and what does this condition come from and is it a serious factor that I should probably stay away from?

Well as far as the 5.9L I don't have any first hand experience, but on Industrial sized generators mated with Cummins engines ranging from 1000 - 2500 HP it is very common & we have to use a blow-by accumulator tank sized around 2.5 gallons. Then we occasionally dump them around once a year. By the way those engines are usually V-12's or V-16's
Charlie from what I can tell you, ask to see maint. records etc. At 170,000 miles if the truck was well taken care of you should have not problems, and this truck has alot more miles in her. Since its a 99 also looking into lift pump and injection pump replacement. Biggest problem with the 2nd Gen's is the lift pump starving the injection pump from fuel. 1st add-on fuel pressure gauge to monitor fuel pressure to injection pump.

Herb, I saw where you have developed a BMK11 blowby filtration recovery system? Will this work for the 5.9? Do you have a kit for it or a list of materials?

Hi Charlie, the correct system for a 99 CTD would be the BMK-15Ea dual bypass system, the kit comes with everthing needed for intallation. Here is the literature for the BMK-15Ea:
