I am interested in performance of the new 6.4 liter powerstroke . I was considering buying one, however I am hearing rumors of trouble

The 6.4L had some issues related to the diesel particulate filters on the exhaust when it was first launched but those issues have since been resolved. In general, the 6.4L engine is an excellent engine and does not have nearly the issues the 6.0L has, especially since the 6.4L does not have all the high pressure o-ring seals that can leak and cause a loss of injection pressure. It also has twin turbos which eliminates the turbo lag present in the 6.0L.

Yes, I heard Ford has a new flash program for the ECM. The problem was arising from engines that were idling quite a bit, appearantly the old flash would only go into DPF regenerate mode at certain highway speeds & RPMs. Those engines that did a lot of stop & go or working on a farm woiuld not reach those old parameters, the DPF would clog & start a fire. But like he mentioned this has been corrected. I also heard a stage 1 injector or one with honed nozzles helps with this problem.

Most of the initial problems are now being addressed at the dealers with a number of TSB's before they place the vehicles out on the lot. The number of problems going off the lot have dropped off significantly.

Does Ford manufacture the 6.4 ? Engine - Were/is there a lot of Warranty issues which should establish how good the Engine really is.

John, Ford does not manufacture the 6.4L. It is engineered and manufactured by International/Navistar in conjunction with Ford Motor Co. POEE ( Powertrain Operations Engine Engineering) to Ford specs for the F-Series trucks. Dave

If I didn't have my 04 cummins, I'd be all over a new 6.4. They seem to be fairly problem free thus far.

I would stick with that proven performer that you have in the 04.

I'm the new guy here and currently drive a 1994 GMC Yukon with the 6.5 diesel. I LOVE THAT TRUCK. Its getting up there in years and milage, so I am looking at my FIRST EVER Ford (F-350). GM broke my heart by putting a GREAT drive train in a less capable truck. I expect to keep that Yukon just for the gas mileage, ~18 in everyday traffic,(until it gives up the ghost) and use the new one for some light to moderate hauling. I am only looking to buy because it seems like this is going to be the best buyer's market for a long time to come. I also heard a rumor that Ford MAY have a new control module flash for improving the fuel efficiency (mileage) coming out? Anyone else hear about it?

The 6.4 has economy issues like all the Ford diesels have had throughout the years. Ford would rather higher HP numbers than decent economy. SCT and DP-Tuner are two programmers that have helped, but there is only so much that you can do with that engine.

The Duramax has been reliable and getting the best economy of the big three when it comes to the DPF equipped trucks. Dodge has been right there after they got the DPF plugging problem resolved and have been getting better economy with miles.

The 6.4 is starting to get a bad rap already, something I personally had hoped would not happen. The Reliability test track is located locally to me (less than a mile from my shop) and a few friends work in the plant or have.
