I bought my Ford 350 dually 6.0 3 months ago (first diesel) and have been suffering. Ran fine for 2 weeks then it wouldn't start unless you shot it with brake cleaner. Once it started it would run and start fine the rest of the day.
The next morning no go. Local diesel mech said it needed glow plug module, put one in no help. Had to haul a boat to Canada stayed for a month it started every day. Came home it won't start. Finally gave up took it to ford dealer they replaced ipr sensor $630. Started at dealer's took it home started the next day, but day after that no start. Towed it back to dealer and while they tried to get it going starter burned out. When they put in new starter it started they said it was good to go $430. Started next day,but then day after no start. Instead of paying for tow the dealer sent mechanic to my house. Hooked up computer no bad codes. Now they say it is bad crank and have to replace engine with short block because there are no replacement parts that will fit. I just want to know if this makes sense to anyone.

Sounds to me like you have more of a fuel drainback problem or a porous suction system. I wouldn't be taking their word on a bad crank, sounds pretty ridiculous to me.

What is the temp where you live? When it does run ,how does it run ? It sound like its temp related to me ,but Im not seeing what u are seeing either! What about a oil pressure leak down test ? Just a suggestion!

Doesn't sound like an HP leak, usually it will start better when cold if there is a leak, and most of your trouble seems to be cold start.

Check that the glow plugs themselves are ok, if they are burnt out you would have cold start issues.

Don't use ether or whatever to get her to start, you could cause alot of damage. These new diesels are not like the old ones.

What you need to do is have someone to moniter the icp, rpm, ipr, ficmvprw, ficmlpwr,B+,and have fuel pressure tester on it when it doesnt crank and see what you dont have ,thats keeping it from running! But you need a real good scanner to do all of that ! Also a good fuel pressure tester!
