I am very new to disel engines. I am a good mechanic when it comes to gasoline engines...doesn't do me any good on this subject. My father vey recently bought a used 6.0 , it's a '03, very nice truck. He bought it "as is"... I wasn't with him unfortunatly. He ran it for 104 miles and it overheated, we opened the hood to find that their was oil mixed into the coolant resivour. I'm used to gasoline engines so the first thing that comes to my mind is a blown head gasket or worse a cracked block. I went with him today and since the dealership rep had stated that this "as is" truck was in excelent condition...they agreed to stand by this and had it hauled back into the dealership to be looked at. My father got a call and they are telling him that it is an oil pump that needs to be replaced and that is why their is oil in the coolant. If this is a possibility...can some one please explain to me in any terms how this is possible. Any feed back would be greatly valued.

6.0 Powerstrokes are nicknamed the "6leaker" for a reason! Have the headgaskets replace the headgakets and install head studs when you do it in place of the head bolts. Torque the heads down according to the studs instructions and it will be all good after that.

As for what the dealer told you, they are blowing smoke up your back side. Tell them to fix it right, pay the extra for them to install the new studs and it will be good for many many miles to come. This is a common problem with the 6.0, good motor after that, just keep clean fuel filters in it also.
